Caymus-Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Each year, the Caymus winemaking team blind tastes all our lots of Cabernet Sauvignon, which come from 8 of Napa Valley’s 16 sub-appellations, reflecting the region’s great diversity of soils and temperature. Only the very best lots make it into Special Selection. Grapes for this wine are Napa Valley floor (75%) that is blended with hillside and sloped sites (25%). This blending of Caymus Cabernets is singular and non-traditional — capturing soft, seductive, beautifully flavored valley fruit, with the mountain wine providing “shoulders.” The 2016 vintage enjoyed an extended barrel aging period of 36 months — the wine simply wanted the extra time in barrel.

The growing season was close to perfection, with dry climatic conditions and moderate temperatures. Full ripeness was achieved prior to onset of winter — a classic Caymus Special Selection.

Description

Scarlet red color, nose of cassis and French oak — even before the first taste, an intense, rich, ripe, intriguing wine captures the imagination. The palate follows through with seamless and complex harmony — full, rich, exciting and ever-ruminating. A momentary evolution in the glass with fine and abunqant tannins balanced by fruit-driven character. Soft and slightly gritty. Ripe yet structured. Expansive and long in finish. Personally, I am excited that Mother Nature can produce a product like this wine.
